Microfauna Supplies

Horticultural Charcoal - Small Medium Large Grade - Natural Aerator | Microfauna Substrate

Horticultural charcoal
can be used in a variety of applications! At MVB Exotics we mix our Medium/Large charcoal into all of our terrarium substrates. This helps to filter the water that passes through, aids in avoiding compaction of the soil, provides additional living space for microfauna and works as a great drainage layer in our tropical setups.

Additionally, our Springtail cultures are grown using our Small/Medium horticultural charcoal. Using charcoal as a breeding substrate provides a clean, mite-free environment with an incredible amount of surface area to produce dense colonies in smaller containers.

[Benefits]

  • SOIL AERATION — Small to medium size pieces keep soil from compacting on the roots of potted plants

  • NUTRIENT BUFFER — Absorbs excess nutrients to keep soil healthy for plant roots

  • DRAINAGE ASSISTANCE — Allows excess moisture to drain through the substrate in tropical setups

  • NATURAL FILTER — Horticultural Charcoal filters harmful and odor-causing bacteria

Our charcoal comes in 6oz portions by weight and packaged in 5" x 7" bags (pictured). We offer discounts for multiple bags and can produce larger quantities by request.

[Ordering Guide]

We recommend (1) bag of charcoal for every 1-2 gallons of substrate.

We recommend the Small/Medium size for use as Springtail breeding substrate

We recommend the Medium/Large size for use in terrarium/vivarium substrate or horticultural purposes.

Rinsed organic charcoal ready to use.

Water Crystals - Non-Toxic Water Absorbing Polymer - Insect Water - Plant Hydration - Roach Crystals

Water Crystals
have a variety of uses in the horticulture and exotic pet hobby! At MVB Exotics we use our Water Crystals in all of our insect breeding containers to provide safe, drown-proof hydration. We also mix hydrated crystals into our planted substrates to aid in substrate hydration and water retention. This helps to keep the water where the plants need it most. Also aids in avoiding compaction of the soil and hydration for microfauna.

Using Water Crystals as a hydration source for insects provides a clean, mold-free environment that protects them from drowning in liquid dishes.

[Benefits]

  • NON TOXIC — Will not harm your insects or the pets that eat the insects.

  • SOIL HYDRATION — Keeps soil from drying out longer, provides sustained hydration for plants.

  • DRAINAGE ASSISTANCE — Allows excess moisture to drain through the substrate by preventing soil compaction.

  • MOLD RESISTANT — Will not mold or produce odor-causing bacteria

  • MULTIVITAMIN COMPATIBLE - Mix in your favorite multivitamin when hydrating your crystals to provide vitamins to your plants, insects or gut-load.

To use: Mix (1) teaspoon with (4) cups of water and allow an hour or so for the crystals to fully hydrate. Once hydrated they can be used as desired. Excess can be kept in a sealed container for later use.

[Ordering Guide]

We recommend (1) packet of Water Crystals for use with 5+ gallons of substrate.

We recommend (1) packet per insect colony for up to 90 days of hydration.
